Betting on Yourself

The playbook behind the career—decision-making from the ladder, the felt, and the age of AI.

Betting on Yourself: Winning in Business, Poker, and the Age of AI — by Joe Matton & Wayne Chiang

Kendall Hunt · Dec 2025 · ISBN 9798319708007 · with Joe Matton

Co-authored with Fortune 500 executive and WSOP champion Joe Matton, Betting on Yourself: Winning in Business, Poker, and the Age of AI distills three decades of high-stakes decision-making into a single, repeatable system.

At its core is the WEB decision framework—a method for weighing expected value, edge, and bankroll the same way a world champion reads a board: fast, honest, and unafraid to commit when the odds are right.

  • W Weigh the expected value before the ego
  • E Establish your edge—or fold
  • B Bet the bankroll you can survive losing

About Wayne Chiang

  • Author

Welcome! I’m Wayne Chiang—known in the competitive gaming world as D22-soso.

My career has been defined by a single driving passion: understanding strategy, risk, and human competition, whether on a digital battlefield, at a high-stakes poker table, or in the boardroom. From winning world championships in esports to designing an everlasting Magic: The Gathering format, patenting casino games and producing world-class livestreams, I bridge the gap between competitive gaming culture, game design, and modern media.

Whether it’s managing risk at the table, designing a new game mechanic, or producing high-stakes live media, the goal remains the same: master the system, anticipate the meta, and execute.

Esports & Gaming Pioneer

Before organized leagues, global arenas, or streaming platforms existed, I was competing at the bleeding edge of real-time strategy (RTS) games and tabletop strategy.

World Champion Status
In 1999, I won the Battle.net Season 1 Ladder World Championship, the first official world title for StarCraft: Brood War. Prior to that, playing under early IPX emulators, I held #1 world rankings in both Command & Conquer and Warcraft II on Case’s Ladder.
Esports Media & “Pimpest Plays”
In an era before automated video replays on Thresh’s gamers.com, I wrote detailed tactical Battle Reports. I conceived and launched “Pimpest Plays”—a curated series highlighting high-skill, inventive tactical maneuvers that helped define how tactical gameplay was documented and appreciated.
Magic: The Gathering
Two-time Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour competitor and the original creator of the popular Cube Draft format.

Poker, Media & Game Innovation

The strategy, game theory, and risk management skills built in early esports naturally led me into professional poker and gaming development during the 2000s boom.

Livestream & Executive Producer
As co-owner and executive producer of Live at the Bike (LATB), I helped build one of the most iconic cash-game livestream broadcasts out of the Parkwest Bicycle Casino. Today, as Senior Creative Producer and Talent Manager at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), I help shape creator programs, rapid-response shoots, and content integration across the global poker ecosystem.
Casino Game Inventor
I apply game design directly to live gaming floors as the inventor and patent owner of Badugi Chase, a table game designed to bring Badugi dynamics into physical casino pits, and 2 Hand Hold’Em, a table game designed to bring multi-hand hold’em dynamics into physical casino pits.

Education & Strategic Vision

  • B.A. in Economics · UC San Diego · 2007

My academic background in analytical economics provided the underlying framework for everything that followed—from bankroll management and game theory to media analytics and AI optimization.

  • Professional Program Screenwriting · UC Los Angeles · 2011

In screenwriting, I was a finalist at Screenplay Expo and Scriptopolooza and interviewed twice for the UCLA Screenwriting MFA before moving on.
